How do you manage culture shock as a digital nomad?

Hey, Freaking Nomads!

Let’s chat about culture shock. We all love the thrill of exploring new places, but sometimes the differences can feel overwhelming. From food to customs to language, adapting isn’t always easy, is it?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

• What’s been your biggest culture shock moment so far?
• How do you stay grounded when everything feels unfamiliar?
• Any go-to tips for embracing new cultures faster?

If you’ve found a way to turn these challenges into opportunities, share your experience! And if you’re still figuring it out, that’s okay too—sometimes sharing helps us all learn :muscle:

:joy: One of my biggest culture shock moments was realising that in some countries, silence in conversations is normal—it took me a while not to jump in and fill every pause! To stay grounded, I focus on small daily routines, like morning coffe or an evening walk. My go-to tip for adapting faster: learn a few phrases in the local language; it shows effort and usually gets a warm response.

This is me also!! When I first started traveling, the silence thing threw me off so much—I was always filling the pauses, and people would just give me these polite smiles. It’s such a shift when you realize that sometimes silence isn’t awkward—it’s just there.
