🛏️ Would you ever split a hotel room with another solo traveler to save money?

Quick question I’ve been thinking about while traveling solo on a budget —

Would you consider sharing a hotel room with another verified solo traveler if:

– you could both save 50% on the booking

– you had matching travel dates

– and you could choose who you matched with (like in Couchsurfing or Bumble BFF)?

Hotels usually charge the same for 1 or 2 guests… so there’s potential to split the cost and free up more budget for the fun stuff — surfboards, street food, or just another week on the road. 🌍💸

We’re testing out this idea right now and would love to hear from the community:

No way. I've been living like this for ten years and the longer I do it, the more important it is to have a sanctuary that is completely my own (both at night and in case I need to hole up and work). I would be interested in a program like Hacker Paradise where solo travelers all meet in one place and get their own rooms—I like the idea of having my solitude whenever I need it and also having the option to join the community whenever I need that. Totally hear you, Layne — having your own sanctuary while on the road can be incredibly important, especially for long-term travelers or those balancing work and solitude.

That said, we’re also exploring the idea for 2+ bedroom apartments — not just hotel rooms — to give solo travelers the option to split costs while still having private space (separate bedrooms, shared kitchen/living).

We’re not trying to replace solo travel as we know it, but offer flexibility for people who are open to share certain moments (or costs) — more like a Couchsurfing-meets-Airbnb hybrid, with real control over who you match with.

Definitely appreciate the Hacker Paradise mention too — it's a great example of the value of choice in community. 🙌

Hi! The idea definitely makes sense in theory—if all those “ifs” line up 😊—but in practice I think it could be pretty challenging. For some people it might not be a problem, yet for many, even coordinating dates and preferences with friends is hard, let alone doing it with strangers.
