Hey Aditya, welcome to the nomadic life and congrats on taking that first leap! 🚀
I actually started out in a pretty similar situation, doing SEO (shared my tips here on how to start) and content projects for small clients right after I left my 9-to-5.
What helped me the most in the beginning was not waiting for clients to come to me, but putting myself where they were already looking for help.
Here are a few things that worked for me (and might work for you too):
Freelance platforms like Upwork are great to build your first few relationships and testimonials. Don’t worry about underpricing at first (those first few happy clients will open bigger doors later, trust me)
Cold outreach with value first. Instead of just saying “I do social media management,” look for small brands or creators whose content you like and send them a short Loom video or audit with 2–3 quick wins they could apply. People remember that!
Community networking! This is honestly underrated. Spaces like this one or niche Facebook/Slack communities are goldmines. Most of my long-term clients came through recommendations, not job boards.
As for skills, I’d say focus on strategy and storytelling if you plan to become a social media manager. Tools and trends change fast, but the ability to make a brand sound human online is what keeps you valuable. Also, I would look into AI video tools, which are pretty hot nowadays.
And yes, I’d definitely mix in content creation or video editing if you enjoy it! The best freelancers I know today are multi-hybrid, they can create, edit, and also understand how content fits into a business strategy.
Where are you thinking of heading first on your nomad journey, by the way?
