I’d definitely put the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 at the top of your list right now.
I spent a good chunk of time there, and I’d actually recommend skipping Punta Cana (it’s mostly resorts, pricey, and you don’t get much of a local vibe). Instead, head over to the Samaná Peninsula. It’s super affordable compared to other Caribbean spots and you still get that authentic, small-town feeling.
My favorite spot in the whole peninsula was Las Galeras, it’s honestly magical, with quiet beaches and a super chill atmosphere. Las Terrenas is also incredible, especially the beaches around there (some of the best I’ve seen in the Caribbean).
Internet is solid enough for remote work (4G works fine), although you won't find much of an expat and nomad community (they are more in Santo Domingo) but you will definitely get to know the locals and live a good remote life without the crazy touristy feel.
If you’re looking for safe, affordable, and still very “Caribbean,” I’d say go for Samaná over Punta Cana any day. I loved it.
