Which are the cheapest and safest Caribbean islands?

Starting to plan for winter already and thinking maybe that the Caribbean could be a great spot. But I know it can get pricey fast, and safety is also a factor in some places, especially when you’re staying for a few weeks or months and not just doing the resort thing.

I’m looking for recommendations on islands that are both affordable and safe for digital nomads or long-term travelers. It should ideally have a decent connection (even 4G) and a bit of a community (even if small).

So far I’ve heard good things about places like:

Dominican Republic (maybe Las Terrenas or Cabarete?)
Grenada
Puerto Rico (but not sure about costs)
Roatán (I know, technically Honduras)

Anyone here spent time in the Caribbean on a budget and felt safe?
